Research shows that traditional ways of educating students could benefit from innovative technologies such as AR to improve student engagement with a course textbook. Some of the approaches described by the researchers include using 3D models, video, and audio to augment reading materials (Ivanova et al, 2014). The benefits of utilizing AR to enhance the reading experience can extend well beyond educational textbooks to include fictional and non-fictional books, magazines, newspapers, posters, and other printed ephemera.
For this project, students leveraged the affordances of augmented reality to turn their favorite book (picture book, comic book, textbook, magazine, or any other publications of their choosing) into a dynamic reading experience using image markers to trigger verbal and visual cues. Students were also encouraged to explore the design of other marker-based AR experiences beyond books.
